Test Yourself - Why Open Exhibits Are So Cool

Thinking differently in terms of how I normally shoot was the order of the day for my latest Orms #SPACEOpenExhibition submissions - the whole process of which was challenging, and also fruitful.

Although I wasn't as lucky as I was in October last year to have any images selected for the exhibition, I was a good experience trying to put some shots together.

I would encourage all aspiring, as well as seasoned photographers, to enter into open exhibitions where you find the theme or the brief particularly challenging - it will not only help to stretch your mind, your comfort zone, and the limits of your photographic skills, but also help you to learn without fear of failure. This is not a paid assignment or a client to please. And if you love using your camera and shooting in new places, you quite literally have nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain.

Being without a drone, I obviously had to play around with new perspectives with photos taken from some kind of vantage point...

I shot from a skyscraper in São Paulo at after midnight, from an aeroplane flying over the Andes Mountains in Patagonian Chile, and I shot the serenity of the clouds hanging over the pampas of Argentina. I stood on the rocky cliffs of our own Cape Point Nature Reserve, and on the spiral staircases of the acclaimed Zeitz MOCAA

I pulled out my camera at sunrise, at noon, and at night. I toyed with lines and geometry, textures and shadows. I changed settings, used my equipment in different ways. I stepped back from the details and looked at the bigger picture, and then I looked at the details again. I shifted perspectives, and I took my time. I experimented.

Also, I failed a lot. And I learnt even more. This is what the art of photography is all about, and I love it.
I hope you enjoy the shots as much I did taking them.

Head on down to the open exhibition tonight  (15th February 2018) and see not only inspiring images submitted from other Orms customers but also the works from extremely talented Orms Cape Town School of Photography students.

Stay awesome,

PS: Remember... don't be afraid to fail.

"My dad encouraged us to fail. Growing up, he would ask us what we failed at that week. If we didn't have something, he would be disappointed. It changed my mindset at an early age that failure is not the outcome, failure is not trying. Don't be afraid to fail."
